Sara Crewe is a very intelligent, polite, and creative young girl. Born to a wealthy soldier in India, Sara was brought all the way to London in Victorian-era England for a formal education. At the upscale boarding school, Sara is forced to tolerate the haughty, disdainful headmistress, Miss Minchin. It only gets worse for poor Sara Crewe when a distressing event unfolds to leave her impoverished and at the mercy of the jealous Miss Minchin. Sara undergoes numerous trials as she humbly allows herself to be subjected to servitude, but with the help of several dear friends, she remains as proud and unwavering and imaginative as ever, proving to all that anyone can be "A Little Princess".

`The Secret Garden` tells the tale of ten year old Mary Lennox, a mean-tempered little girl, ignored by her parents, who is made an orphan in a cholera epidemic in India and sent to Misselthwaite Manor in Yorkshire to live with an uncle she has never met. From this unpromising start Mary slowly blossoms. She hears of a secret garden, left untended for ten years since the death her uncle`s beloved wife. Guided by a cheeky robin, Mary finds the garden`s lost key and, with the help of Dickon, a local boy with an uncanny understanding of nature, sets about restoring the site to its original glory. The garden is transformed and, with it, Mary herself. No longer self-absorbed, she shares her excitement with her bed-bound cousin, Colin, who is as emotionally stunted as she was, and the magic of the secret garden transforms him too, both in body and soul. `The Secret Garden` is a touching and uplifting tale of the joy to be found in friendship and in the connection with the rhythms of Nature.

Far from fading with time, Kenneth Grahame`s classic tale of fantasy has attracted a growing audience in each generation. Rat, Mole, Badger and the preposterous Mr Toad (with his `Poop-poop-poop` road-hogging new motor car), have brought delight to many through the years with their odd adventures on and by the river, and at the imposing residence of Toad Hall.

One day a smart little groom rode into the court where Tom lived. Tom was just hiding behind a wall, to heave half a brick at his horse`s legs, as is the custom of that country when they welcome strangers; but the groom saw him, and halloed to him to know where Mr. Grimes, the chimney-sweep, lived. Now, Mr. Grimes was Tom`s own master, and Tom was a good man of business, and always civil to customers, so he put the half-brick down quietly behind the wall, and proceeded to take orders.

The "Jungle Book" introduces Mowgli, the human foundling adopted by a family of wolves. It tells of the enmity between him and the tiger Shere Khan, who killed Mowgli`s parents, and of the friendship between the man-cub and Bagheera, the black panther, and Baloo, the sleepy brown bear, who instructs Mowgli in the Laws of the Jungle. "The Second Jungle Book" contains some of the most thrilling of the Mowgli stories. It includes "Red Dog", in which Mowgli forms an unlikely alliance with the python Kaa, "How Fear Came" and "Letting in the Jungle" as well as "The Spring Running", which brings Mowgli to manhood and the realisation that he must leave Bagheera, Baloo and his other friends for the world of man.

`Everyone in Greenall Bridge knew Sam Carraclough`s Lassie. In fact, you might say that she was the best-known dog in the village ...because nearly every man in the village agreed she was the finest collie he had ever laid eyes on.` Sam`s son Joe and Lassie are a devoted pair but a time comes when they have to be parted. The Carracloughs are not well off and when they fall on hard times Sam is forced to sell his champion dog to the Duke of Rudling, whose great estate borders their Yorkshire village. But Lassie escapes and makes her way home to the Carracloughs. The Duke, not one to be tricked by a dog, claims Lassie back and she is taken many miles away to the Duke`s other home in Scotland. But again Lassie pines for her proper home and escapes. Undaunted by the challenge, she sets off on the long trek back to her Yorkshire home. She faces many dangers and adventures along the way but she also meets some kind people who offer her help and comfort. At the end, when Joe has given up all hope of ever seeing his long-lost companion again, the weary Lassie returns and he finds her waiting for him at the school gates in her accustomed spot, just like old times. Lassie and Joe are joyfully reunited. Against all the odds, Lassie has come home!

"Call of the Wild" (1903) and "White Fang" (1906) vividly describe the brutal and vigorous life of the Far North. "Call of the Wild" describes the extraordinary adventures of a dog who escapes civilisation to lead a wolf pack. Whereas "White Fang" is a moving account of a ferocious wolf who is tamed as he learns to love and trust his master. At one level these stories are "ripping yarns", at another, London utilises ideas of some of the most influencial scientific and socialist thinkers of his day. He related Charles Darwin`s theories of "the survival of the fittest", the theme of instinct and the laws of social behaviour to his work. However, it is London`s ability to relate his stories to universals that ultimately ensure their timeless appeal.

When Pollyanna Whittier goes to live with her sourtempered aunt after her father’s death, things seem bad enough, but then a dreadful accident ensues. However, Pollyanna’s sunny nature and good humour prove to have an astonishing effect on all around her, and this wonderful tale of how cheerfulness can conquer adversity has remained one of the world’s most popular children’s books since its first publication in 1913. In "Pollyanna Grows Up," the only sequel written by Porter herself, Pollyanna finds that that, despite being cured of her health problems, adulthood brings fresh challenges to be overcome.

"The Little Prince" is a classic tale of equal appeal to children and adults. On one level it is the story of an airman`s discovery in the desert of a small boy from another planet - the Little Prince of the title - and his stories of intergalactic travel, while on the other hand it is a thought-provoking allegory of the human condition. First published in 1943, the year before the author`s death in action, this new translation contains Saint-Exupery`s delightful illustrations.

The Comedies with Introductions by Judith Buchanan These Comedies are among the best loved of Shakespeare`s plays. In each a problem emerges, is then intensified to a point of maximum confusion and potential upset, before the chaos is resolved, however improbably, into general goodwill and a spate of marriages. The triumph of these plays lies in the way they mingle humorous stage business and dexterous word play with a more serious study of identity, gender, dreaming, the meaning of love, even of the theatre itself. They reassure us that with all its faults, the world will always in the end be redeemable. The Tragedies with Introductions by Emma Smith `Not for an age but for all time.` So Ben Jonson established what we now take for granted: Shakespeare`s unique place among the world`s great authors. Romeo and Juliet shows us the archetypal story of fated young love; Hamlet, the tortured psyche of the young prince of Denmark; Othello, a strikingly modern representation of racial difference; King Lear, a man stripped of all material and psychological comforts; and Macbeth, a dark investigation of the origins and effects of, evil. The plays throw a fascinating light on the concerns of Shakespeare`s day, yet offer perennial insights into the nature of human emotion.

In From the Earth to the Moon and Around the Moon, Jules Verne turned the ancient fantasy of space flight into a believable technological possibility - an engineering dream for the industrial age. Directly inspired by Verne’s story, enthusiasts worked successfully at overcoming the practical difficulties, and within a century, human beings did indeed fly to the Moon. Curiously, however, Verne is unlikely to have thought it possible that a manned projectile could actually be fired out of a giant cannon, rising higher than the Moon, swinging around it, and then landing safely back on Earth. He had used the science of the day to construct a literary conjuring trick, a hoax, one of the most successful in all history. By skilful misdirection he drew the attention of readers away from weaknesses in the project. Read the book and you, too, will be fooled into accepting the realistic possibility in Verne’s time of that dream of flying to the Moon.
